Club Championships Report

Well what a weekend! The sun was shining and so was some of the golf.

We saw some great shots and some not so great ones but it seemed like most people were enjoying themselves.

Firstly I would like to thank all the volunteers. The Registration team, starters and ball spotters made the event run smoothly and I am sure you all appreciate them taking the time to look for the odd stray ball that may have been hit.

Secondly the Sponsors Nick Bowley, Chris Devonshire and Dazzling Events who kept you all fed and watered over the two days.

A massive thanks to Gary Rinaldi for producing those really rather snazzy Tee Boards I think they really made the tee boxes look like a proper tournament.  That leads me on to Dave Knight who along with his team presented a great golf course. It has been trying times and they have been working from 12 midnight till at least midday the next day for the last two weeks to prepare the course. Thank you Dave and please pass on our thanks to all the boys for their hard work.

Obviously to Andy Storer, Colin MacDougall and Tom Lane for doing all the Scoring. Tom as usual was fantastic and I don’t think he even used the eraser once!!!! In Colin and Andy I think we have found the next two greats of British sporting commentary as they sat there watching you all finish the 18th. Commenting on the shots played and intertwining short stories it was like Peter Allis and Ken Brown at the Open.

To Kim Richardson our Lady Captain she was there at 6 both mornings and if it wasn’t for her Aladdin’s Cave of a truck bringing with her everything from chairs to Gazebos and Tables we wouldn’t have had quite the event! She also found time to water the flowers and sweep up outside the Pro Shop so Thank you Kim you did far more than you needed to!

To all the players, I hope you had fun and we really do appreciate the spirit in which you play the game. Two day events are tough and in the heat we had at the weekend it was especially gruelling. So thank you to all those who turned out on both days whether you had a good day one or not it was great to see and once again showed the spirit within the club!

To our resident Photographer Steve Lillywhite thank you for being there with your lenses at the ready.  If you would like to see the photos Steve took of the day please follow the link attached.

So on to the Winner’s Podiums.

The Ladies event was close with last year’s Club Champion Fay Unsworth and Lady Captain Kim Richardson battling for the title. Kim had a six shot lead after the end of play on Saturday but was feeling the heat as Fay made a front nine charge and by the 12th hole the lead was gone. However a couple of mistakes from Fay and some solid golf down the stretch from Kim was enough to see out the Victory. Many congratulations to Kim for two solid days and a very worthy Winner.

The Ladies Nett Competition was won by Maria Tillett with Kim finishing a close second. Maria carded a Nett 75 and Nett 74 respectively and showed some real class over the finishing holes as I am sure she knew exactly the state of play coming down the stretch. Congratulations Maria and I do hope the kids at your School celebrate the trophy along with you.

The Men’s Nett competition was again a close run thing. There were some great first round scores with Gordon McNair leading the way with a Nett 66 followed by Tom Fulker with a nett 69. These two were actually drawn together for the second day which made for a great battle in the final round. I think from talking to the two of them there were a few ups and downs for both players but ultimately it was Tom Fulker who came out on top with a Nett 80 compared to Gordon’s Nett 84. This meant Tom won by a single shot. Well played to both players and congratulations Tom.

The Club Champion:

Having joined only a few months ago it seems the Harry Bowness set his stall out for the Club Champs from the beginning. With some of our lower handicap players in good form this would be a tough tournament.

After day one of the tournament Harry led with a great round of 73 but there were still three or four players in touching distance of him if he slipped up. However Harry held his nerve and with a final round of 77 he won the trophy with the closest challenger our defending champ Aaron Henry. Tony Coleman our President handed over the Trophy in front of many of you who stayed around to see the end. For a young man Harry made a very honest and well-articulated speech and it was great to see so many of you stay around till the end. That is what makes Donnington Grove’s Club Championships that little bit Special!

Well played Harry and a very deserving Champion for 2018!

Well played to all who took part!

Once again thank you to all who helped in any way shape or form you all made the weekend what it was.
